Best Activities in Tanzania

Tanzania is a land of rhythm, wilderness, and timeless beauty, offering some of the most authentic and unforgettable experiences in Africa. From vast savannahs rich with wildlife to pristine tropical islands, every journey through Tanzania tells a powerful story.

Witness the Great Migration in the Serengeti, one of nature’s most spectacular events, as millions of wildebeest and zebra thunder across endless plains and brave crocodile-filled rivers in a dramatic cycle of survival. Encounter the legendary Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — in world-renowned destinations such as the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara.

Go beyond traditional game drives with walking safaris, where you connect deeply with the land, learning its tracks, sounds, and secrets alongside expert local guides. Enjoy peaceful boat safaris in Nyerere National Park (Selous), drifting past hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife in one of Africa’s largest protected wilderness areas.

For adventure lovers, challenge yourself on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, and stand on the Roof of Africa at sunrise. For equally rewarding but quieter experiences, trek Mount Meru or explore the lush Usambara Mountains, where breathtaking scenery meets rich local culture and village life.

After your adventure, unwind on Tanzania’s idyllic islands. Discover the white-sand beaches and turquoise waters of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia Islands, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and romantic sunset dhow cruises along the Indian Ocean.

Tanzania is more than a destination — it’s a journey of wild beauty, cultural connection, and unforgettable moments.

The park spans over 14,750 square kilometers (5,700 square miles), making it one of Africa’s largest national parks. The Ngorongoro Crater is a large volcanic caldera located in Tanzania. It’s often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World” because of its rich wildlife and beautiful scenery. Inside the crater, you can find many animals, including the Big Five: lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos. This makes it one of the best places in Africa to see these animals up close.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, located in northeastern Tanzania, is the tallest mountain in Africa, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. It is a free-standing mountain, meaning it is not part of any mountain range. The mountain consists of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is renowned for its stunning landscapes, characterized by expansive savannahs, dense woodlands, and iconic baobab trees. The park is a haven for wildlife, particularly during the dry season, when large herds of elephants gather around the Tarangire River in search of water. Tarangire is also known for its rich diversity of species, including lions, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests, making it one of Tanzania’s top safari destinations.

Tanzania Travel Guide

Is Tanzania safe for tourists?

Yes, Tanzania is considered one of the safest countries to visit in Africa. It welcomes over a million tourists each year and has a stable political environment. Most visits are trouble-free, especially when traveling with a reputable tour company. Petty crimes like pickpocketing can happen in urban areas, so it’s best to take common-sense precautions—avoid walking alone at night, don’t display valuables openly, and always follow your guide’s advice. In national parks and rural areas, safety concerns are minimal. Travel with a professional operator adds an extra layer of security and comfort.

Tanzania can be visited year-round, but the ideal time depends on what you want to do. The dry season (June to October) is perfect for wildlife safaris, as animals gather around water sources and are easier to spot in the open bush. This is also the best time to visit the Serengeti for the Great Migration river crossings. For climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, both the January to March and June to October windows are ideal due to clearer weather. The wet season (March to May) sees fewer tourists and lush scenery, which photographers and bird watchers often enjoy, though some roads and lodges may be closed due to heavy rains.

Yes, most travelers will need a visa to enter Tanzania. You can obtain a Tanzanian tourist visa online through the eVisa system or upon arrival at the airport. The visa typically allows for a stay of up to 90 days. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date and has at least one blank page. Visa requirements can change, so it’s wise to check the latest information with the Tanzanian embassy or consulate in your country before traveling.

Before visiting Tanzania, it’s important to consult with your doctor or a travel health clinic. Recommended vaccinations often include yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and tetanus. A yellow fever certificate is required if you’re arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever–endemic country. Malaria is present in most parts of Tanzania, so taking antimalarial medication and using insect repellent is advised. It’s also smart to bring a basic first-aid kit and any prescription medications you may need, as pharmacies may be limited in rural areas.

The local currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). While some places accept U.S. dollars—especially hotels, lodges, and tourist services—it’s good to have local currency for everyday expenses like food, tips, and local market purchases. ATMs are available in major cities and towns, and credit cards are accepted in many hotels and larger establishments. However, it’s wise to carry some cash, especially in rural areas where electronic payments may not be available. Note that U.S. dollar bills printed before 2006 are often not accepted.

Absolutely. Travel insurance is highly recommended when visiting Tanzania. It should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, baggage loss, and emergency evacuation, especially if you’re planning activities like a safari, mountain trekking, or diving. Medical care in Tanzania can be basic, especially outside major cities, and evacuation to a better-equipped facility can be costly without insurance. Read your policy carefully to make sure it includes adventure travel if that’s part of your plan.

Swahili and English are the official languages of Tanzania. Swahili (Kiswahili) is spoken by nearly everyone and is deeply rooted in Tanzanian culture. However, in the tourism industry—hotels, lodges, airports, and with guides—English is widely spoken, making communication easy for most international visitors.

Many tour guides and hospitality staff are multilingual and can speak other major languages such as German, French, Spanish, Italian, and even Chinese or Russian, depending on the needs of their guests. If you have a specific language preference, you can often request a guide who speaks that language when booking through a specialized tour company.

Learning a few basic Swahili words like “Jambo” (Hello), “Karibu” (Welcome), and “Asante” (Thank you) is always appreciated and can make your experience more engaging and enjoyable.

Yes, taking children on a Tanzania safari is possible, and it can be a wonderful family adventure with proper planning. Many lodges and tour operators offer family-friendly safari packages and accommodations with tailored activities to keep children engaged, like kid-friendly game drives, nature walks, and cultural experiences. It’s generally best to plan shorter game drives to suit young children’s attention spans and select parks with easy access and less travel time, like Tarangire or Ngorongoro Crater. However, be mindful of age restrictions, as some lodges or activities may have minimum age requirements. With the right preparation, a Tanzania safari can be an exciting and educational experience for children, giving them a unique chance to learn about wildlife and conservation firsthand.

Giving Back with Purpose – The Wild Rhythm Way

At Wild Rhythm Adventures, every journey creates impact. With each booking, we donate 5% to support children’s education, school supplies, and essential resources for those in need.
